Radium Girls Memorial
Orange Education Foundation Awarded Grant to Create
Radium Girls Memorial in Historic Park
Orange, NJ — The Orange Education Foundation (OEF) is proud to announce it has been awarded a history program grant from the Essex County Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs Department to create a permanent tribute honoring the Radium Girls in the park at the corner of Alden and High Streets—steps from the former site of the U.S. Radium Corporation.
Funding has been made possible in part by the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the Department of State, through funds administered by the Essex County Division of Cultural & Historic Affairs.
The memorial will honor five courageous women who fought for justice after suffering fatal radiation exposure while painting luminous watch dials in the early 20th century. Their landmark legal battle exposed dangerous workplace practices and helped spark reforms that shaped modern worker protections and safety standards nationwide.
With support from the Orange Education Foundation, the Orange Board of Education, and the City of Orange Township, the tribute will combine remembrance with education—ensuring this pivotal chapter of Orange’s history is preserved and shared with future generations.
“This tribute is more than a memorial—it’s an educational opportunity,” said Ms. Barbara L. Clark, President of the Orange Education Foundation. “The Radium Girls’ courage changed labor laws forever, and we are honored to ensure their story continues to inspire reflection, advocacy, and learning.”
The project aligns with national efforts to recognize the Radium Girls’ legacy. In 2021, U.S. Senator Cory Booker and others sponsored Senate Resolution 285, formally honoring the women for their role in advancing workplace safety and corporate accountability.
The tribute will feature interpretive signage, historical context, and educational resources for students and visitors. Construction is expected to begin in March 2026, with a community unveiling planned shortly thereafter.
